Well, hello there!
I'm back from Conflikt. Did I forget to mention I was going? Well, it was sort of a surprise to me, too.
I won't go over specific events in detail, really, but suffice it to say I arrived at the con tired and unsure if I was right in my decision to attend, and I left content, exhausted, and already ready for the next con. Friday had some rehearsals and good, quiet discussions, and a nap.
Saturday was the action-packed day. There were three Official Con Items I did.
Number one, a heavenly twofer with Betsy(
stealthcello). The world needs more Betsy:

Number two, the Interfilk auction. (I was wearing something tinier than usual. I'm sure there will be photos.) I got to run several good items, including the signed-by-all-performers Wicked Girls poster, some lovely beadwork by
pondside, and help wench the yet-to-exist GoH Concert CD.
quadrivium herself aided in the wenching by occasionally standing up and offering helpful insights - who would be onstage, that we were going to play the song Courting My Muse, which isn't on a CD yet - and
tanuki_green won the bidding war with a very nice donation to Interfilk.
And, number three, the aforementioned GoH concert. I don't think I'd ever noticed how much I wiggle around onstage if I'm up there for more than three songs in a row. Anyway, it was excellent, and I was pleased and privileged to play not only with Mary, but also with the fantastic Betsy on cello and the incomparable Katie on backing vocals. And there was so much harmony, and laughter:

A very special thanks to
omnisti for doing the video! Click here for the main Conflikt video page with links to the other concerts from Saturday. Also, special thanks to the folks running sound.
And, the last thing I should mention, which was not an Official Con Item - I finally got to play with Sunnie, the Pacific Northwest fiddler/violist/vocalist during Saturday night's open filk! (We hadn't actually met before this weekend.) We played Ashokan Farewell first. I could talk endlessly about what it's like to play music with others, and though I sometimes do, I don't know if I could ever put the right words to it at all, let alone accurately describe a certain song or a certain style of playing with another instrument. Particularly not bowed strings, because they're so deeply wired into my brain. So I'm not going to try. But I can tell you that we inspired beaming grins, tears, and Mark Osier to say, "So, when are you two picking out curtains?" There was a lot more fantastic music that night. I did not play alone at the con. Not once. I don't dislike playing solo. It was just nice, looking back on the weekend, to realize I was always in harmony with somebody else. I needed that.
I had to leave Sunday morning. There was a twinge of reluctance, but I was exhausted. This morning, waking up hurt. It was like being plunged through a cold waterfall of consciousness. I could tell that I hardly moved at all during the night. I haven't fallen asleep that hard in years. It was kinda great. Speaking of falling, this morning I slipped down the front steps of my apartment. I'm gonna have an interesting bruise tomorrow, but no other ill effects. It looks like the forecast for here is snow tonight, snow tomorrow, then some more snow. But I don't have to go to work tomorrow. So I'm staying inside, keeping warm under my custom
hsifyppah cape (I am resplendent and toasty at the same time! And very purple! And maybe missing Brooke a little.) and sipping hot cider.
In other convention news, I can tell you that Capricon is going to be packed with glorious music, and Wild Mercy has a fantastic set list and I can't wait to play with the band again, and there's a chance I'll make it to Anachrocon to perform with Play It With Moxie! I hope everybody's January was a good one. And here's hoping for an easier February for us all.
